During May Defra is implementing a new enterprise business suite based on the Oracle 9i product range, however with an established user base of over 8000 employees the transition to such a system for day to day management of employees is a daunting task as many people are not familiar with the concept of "human resources self service" in an organisation.  Like many other organisations, Defra also has existing infrastructure and technology that just couldn't be ignored in the employee's working day.

The brief was to enable users to transition from the existing intranet site into the Oracle business suite, without having to log into the system, therefore use the desktop logon as the authentication point. In addition to this feature, we needed to provide a simple gateway to the Oracle business suite applications from the intranet pages themselves in order to aid the transition to the new system.

Using a combination of sign on technology and our portal generator, we integrated the new Oracle business suite with their Microsoft based intranet solution producing a seamless user transition between the two systems. It is estimated that the total monthly cost saving on he organisation is between 10,000-20,000 pounds per month from this solution which was implemented in just three weeks from start to finish.

Links directly to Oracle applications or to internet/intranet content can be grouped and embedded with other applications and images. All of which are dynamically displayed depending on the responsibilities the employee has. This is then displayed directly in a normal intranet page. On the right is a snapshot of how the Defra intranet was configured for a normal employee, all displayed without the employee having to log on twice.

SmartBLOCKS is a subsidiary of Inception Architects Ltd, specialising in producing advanced AutoCAD blocks. Unlike other AutoCAD blocks, when you use a SmartBLOCK in your AutoCAD drawing, you do not have to edit the underlying image.

The SmartBLOCKS site includes an on screen dynamic shopping cart that grows and shrinks depending on what you have inside it. The site also includes flash modules for the front page and also the banner at the top to demonstrate exactly what the smartblocks do. This technology was chosen as in some ways resembles the way AutoCAD works, but also allows us to show how the blocks work with the underlying drawing.

This site also includes integration with the PayPal purchasing system, and uses the buyer return and also the internet payment notification system in order to send details of what the person order to Inception, and also generates, on payment confirmation an email to the customer detailing instructions on how to obtain via download, the libraries of SmartBLOCKS they ordered.
